How to Make the Perfect Classic Apple Pie

When it comes to comfort food, few desserts can rival the classic apple pie. The delightful blend of sweet and tart apples enveloped in a flaky, buttery crust is truly irresistible. In this guide, we’ll show you how to make the perfect classic apple pie that will leave your friends and family craving for more.

Ingredients

To create the ultimate apple pie, gather the following ingredients:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into cubes
  • 6-8 tbsp ice water
  • 6-8 medium apples (such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (optional)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Making the Pie Crust

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Stir well to mix.

2. Add the chilled butter cubes to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your hands, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

3. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Divide the dough in half, shape into disks, and wrap them in plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

Preparing the Apple Filling

1. While the dough chills, peel, core, and slice the apples into thin slices.

2. In a large bowl, combine the apple slices with granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch (if using). Toss until the apples are evenly coated and let them sit for about 15 minutes to macerate.

Assembling the Pie

1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

2. Roll out one disk of chilled dough on a floured surface to fit your pie pan. Carefully transfer the dough to the pan, pressing it gently into the edges.

3. Pour the prepared apple filling into the crust, making sure to pile it high—the apples will shrink as they cook.

4. Roll out the second disk of dough and lay it over the filling. You can create a lattice design by cutting strips of dough and weaving them over the pie if you prefer a decorative touch, or simply cover it with the whole sheet.

5. Trim the excess dough and crimp the edges to seal. Cut small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.

Baking the Pie

1. In a small bowl, beat the egg and brush it over the crust for a golden finish.

2. Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips and bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.

3. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for an additional 30-40 minutes. The pie is done when the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Cooling and Serving

Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing. This resting period allows the juices to set, ensuring clean slices. Serve your classic apple pie warm or at room temperature, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgence.

With this recipe, you can create a mouthwatering classic apple pie that is perfect for any occasion. Enjoy the sweet aroma of baked apples wafting through your kitchen as you share this timeless dessert with loved ones!
