Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 cup of broccoli florets
  • 1 carrot, julienned
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (optional for thickening)
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap it in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 15-20 minutes. Once pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.

Step 2: Sauté the Tofu

In a large skillet or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes and sauté until they are golden brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set it aside.

Step 3: Cook the Vegetables

In the same skillet, add the minced garlic and grated ginger. Sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then, add the sliced bell pepper, broccoli florets, and julienned carrot. Stir-fry the vegetables for about 5-7 minutes, until they are tender but still crisp.

Step 4: Combine Tofu and Sauce

Return the tofu to the skillet with the vegetables. In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Pour the sauce over the tofu and vegetables, stirring to combine. Let everything simmer for about 5 minutes.

Step 5: Thicken the Sauce (Optional)

If you prefer a thicker sauce, stir in the cornstarch mixture at this point. Continue to simmer and stir until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 6: Serve and Garnish

Once everything is heated through, remove the skillet from heat. Serve the braised tofu and vegetables warm, garnished with chopped green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds if desired. This dish pairs wonderfully with steamed rice or noodles.

Tips for Best Results

  • Feel free to use any vegetables you have on hand, such as snap peas or zucchini.
  • For added flavor, marinate the tofu in soy sauce for 30 minutes before cooking.
  • Adjust the level of soy sauce and seasoning based on your taste preference.

Now you have a delightful and healthy recipe for Chinese-style braised tofu and vegetables. Perfect for a quick weekday dinner or a relaxed weekend meal, this dish will satisfy your cravings while leaving you feeling nourished. Enjoy your cooking!
