Chinese-style spicy tofu and vegetable stir-fry is a vibrant and flavorful dish that brings together the richness of tofu and the crunch of fresh vegetables. This dish is not only delicious but also packed with nutrients, making it a perfect option for both vegetarians and meat-lovers alike. Follow this simple guide to prepare a mouth-watering Chinese-style spicy tofu and vegetable stir-fry at home.

Ingredients

  • 14 ounces of firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 1 carrot, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 2-3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Preparing the Tofu

Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 15 minutes. Once pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.

Step 2: Cooking the Tofu

In a large pan or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and sauté until golden brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the tofu from the pan and set it aside.

Step 3: Stir-Frying the Vegetables

In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, stirring for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Next, add the sliced bell pepper, broccoli florets, and carrot. Stir-fry the vegetables for about 5-7 minutes until they are tender yet still crisp.

Step 4: Combining Ingredients

Return the cooked tofu to the pan with the vegetables. Pour in the soy sauce, chili sauce, and sesame oil. If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix the cornstarch with a little water and add it to the pan. Stir everything together gently to combine, cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 5: Serving

Once cooked, remove the stir-fry from the heat. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. This dish pairs wonderfully with steamed rice or noodles.

Tips for a Perfect Stir-Fry

  • For extra flavor, consider adding soy sauce alternatives like tamari or coconut aminos.
  • Feel free to mix and match your favorite vegetables, such as snow peas, zucchini, or baby corn.
  • Adjust the spiciness by varying the amount of chili sauce or adding sliced chili peppers during cooking.
  • Serve with a side of pickled vegetables for an authentic touch.

This Chinese-style spicy tofu and vegetable stir-fry is sure to impress with its bold flavors and vibrant colors. Easy to customize, it's a dish that allows you to showcase your culinary creativity while keeping your meal healthy and satisfying. Enjoy your cooking adventure!
