How to Make a Simple and Elegant Tiramisu

Tiramisu is a classic Italian dessert that combines the richness of coffee, the creaminess of mascarpone cheese, and the satisfying crunch of ladyfingers. Making a simple and elegant tiramisu at home is easier than you might think. Follow this easy recipe to create a dessert that will impress your family and friends.

Ingredients

  • 6 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 8 ounces mascarpone cheese
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 24 ladyfinger cookies
  • Cocoa powder for dusting

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cream Mixture

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until well combined. Add the milk and heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly. Cook until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool.

Step 2: Whip the Cream

In a separate bowl, beat the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese until smooth. Once the egg mixture has cooled, fold it into the mascarpone mixture until there are no streaks remaining.

Step 3: Prepare the Coffee Mixture

In a shallow dish, combine the cooled coffee with the coffee liqueur, if using. This mixture will be used to soak the ladyfingers.

Step 4: Layer the Tiramisu

Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they are soaked but not falling apart. Arrange a layer of soaked ladyfingers in the bottom of a 9x9-inch dish. Spread half of the cream mixture over the layer of ladyfingers. Repeat with another layer of soaked ladyfingers and top with the remaining cream mixture.

Step 5: Chill and Serve

Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results. Before serving, dust the top of the tiramisu with cocoa powder using a fine sieve. Slice and serve chilled.

Tips for the Perfect Tiramisu

  • Use finely ground espresso for a richer coffee flavor.
  • Make sure to use high-quality mascarpone cheese for the creamiest texture.
  • For an adult version, consider adding more coffee liqueur to enhance the flavor.

Making a simple and elegant tiramisu is a rewarding experience that doesn’t require extensive baking skills. This dessert is sure to be a crowd-pleaser and leave your guests asking for seconds!
