How to Make Chinese-style Broccoli with Tofu

Chinese-style broccoli, also known as Gai Lan, is a delicious and nutritious vegetable that pairs wonderfully with tofu for a satisfying meal. This dish is perfect for anyone looking to enjoy a healthy, plant-based option that is packed with flavor. Below is a simple recipe on how to make Chinese-style broccoli with tofu.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch of Chinese broccoli (Gai Lan)
  • 1 block of firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce (or a vegetarian alternative)
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu

1. Start by draining the tofu and pressing it between paper towels to remove excess moisture. This step is crucial for achieving a crisp texture.

2. Once pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.

Cook the Tofu

3. In a large non-stick skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.

4. Add the cubed tofu to the skillet and fry until golden brown on all sides, approximately 6-8 minutes. Make sure to turn the pieces gently to avoid breaking them.

5. Once cooked, remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.

Prepare the Broccoli

6. In the same skillet, add a little more oil if needed, then add the minced garlic. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

7. Next, add the Chinese broccoli, cooking for 3-5 minutes until the stems are tender yet still crisp. If you like your broccoli more tender, add a tablespoon of water and cover the skillet to steam it for a couple of minutes.

Combine Ingredients

8. Once the broccoli is cooked, return the tofu to the skillet.

9. Pour the soy sauce and oyster sauce over the vegetables and tofu, tossing everything together to ensure even coating. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Finish the Dish

10. Drizzle the sesame oil over the dish for added flavor and toss once more.

11. Taste and season with salt and pepper as desired.

Serve

12. Transfer the Chinese-style broccoli and tofu to a serving platter.

13. Optionally, sprinkle sesame seeds on top for garnish.

14. This dish can be served on its own or alongside steamed rice or noodles for a filling meal.

Conclusion

Making Chinese-style broccoli with tofu is a simple and rewarding cooking experience. This dish not only captures the vibrant flavors of Chinese cuisine but is also a fantastic source of nutrients. Enjoy your delicious, homemade meal!
