How to Make Chinese-style Stir-Fried Tofu with Mushrooms

Chinese-style stir-fried tofu with mushrooms is a delicious and healthy dish that is easy to prepare. This savory meal is perfect for weeknight dinners or meal prep, packed with flavor and nutrients. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to create this tasty dish.

Ingredients:

  • 14 oz firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 2 cups fresh mushrooms (shiitake, button, or any variety you prefer)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (or mushroom sauce for a vegan option)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water or vegetable broth
  • Green onions for garnish
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap it in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for at least 15 minutes. This step helps improve the texture and allows the tofu to absorb more flavors.

Step 2: Cut the Tofu

After pressing, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes. This size ensures even cooking and better incorporation into the stir-fry.

Step 3: Sauté the Tofu

In a large nonstick skillet or wok, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and fry them until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Once cooked, remove the tofu from the pan and set aside.

Step 4: Cook the Vegetables

In the same skillet, add a little more oil if necessary. Add the minced garlic and ginger, sautéing for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Next, add the sliced mushrooms and stir-fry for about 5 minutes, until they are tender and starting to release their moisture.

Step 5: Combine the Ingredients

Return the browned tofu to the skillet with the mushrooms. In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, and water or vegetable broth. Pour this sauce over the tofu and mushrooms, gently tossing everything together to evenly coat.

Step 6: Stir-Fry

Continue to stir-fry everything for another 2-3 minutes. This allows the sauce to thicken and the flavors to meld perfectly. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.

Step 7: Serve and Garnish

Once everything is well combined and heated through, remove the skillet from heat. Transfer the stir-fried tofu and mushrooms to a serving dish and garnish with chopped green onions.

Serving Suggestions

Chinese-style stir-fried tofu with mushrooms is versatile and can be served alone or over steamed rice or noodles. Add a side of sautéed vegetables or a fresh salad to complete the meal.

Conclusion

This delightful stir-fried tofu dish is not only a crowd-pleaser but also serves as an excellent source of plant-based protein. Enjoy making this healthy dish at home and impress your family and friends with your culinary skills!
