How to Make Chinese-style Stir-Fried Tofu with Cabbage

Chinese-style stir-fried tofu with cabbage is a delicious and nutritious dish that perfectly combines flavors and textures. This easy recipe is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or a healthy meal prep option. Follow these simple steps to create a vibrant and satisfying meal that everyone will love.

Ingredients:

  • 1 block of firm tofu
  • 2 cups of shredded cabbage (green or napa)
  • 1 cup of bell peppers, sliced (any color)
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger, minced
  • 3 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Green onions, chopped for garnish

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Tofu:

Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the block of firm tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place it on a cutting board. Put a heavy skillet or a few cans on top of the tofu to help press it. Leave it for about 15-20 minutes.

2. Cut the Tofu:

After pressing, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes. In a medium bowl, toss the tofu with cornstarch to create a light coating that will help it crisp up while stir-frying.

3. Stir-Fry the Tofu:

Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the tofu cubes and fry until they are golden and crispy on all sides. This should take about 10 minutes. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set it aside.

4. Sauté the Vegetables:

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and ginger, stirring for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then, add the sliced bell peppers and shredded cabbage. Stir-fry the vegetables for about 5 minutes, or until they are tender but still crisp.

5. Combine and Season:

Return the cooked tofu to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour in the soy sauce and sesame oil, tossing everything together to coat evenly. Stir-fry for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

6. Serve:

Remove the stir-fried tofu and cabbage from the heat. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions for added freshness. Enjoy it on its own or serve it over steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Tips for the Best Stir-Fried Tofu:

  • Make sure to press the tofu well to achieve a crispy texture.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables, such as carrots or snow peas, to enhance the dish.
  • Adjust the soy sauce to your taste and try using low-sodium soy sauce for a healthier option.

This Chinese-style stir-fried tofu with cabbage is not only easy to make but is also packed with protein, fiber, and essential nutrients. It’s a versatile dish that can be customized based on your preferences. Enjoy your culinary journey and savor the delightful flavors!
