How to Prepare Chinese-style Stir-Fried Bok Choy with Tofu and Garlic

Chinese-style stir-fried bok choy with tofu and garlic is a delicious and nutritious dish that’s easy to prepare. This simple recipe combines the crisp texture of bok choy with the savory flavor of garlic and the protein power of tofu. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or a beginner, following these steps will help you create this flavorful meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound bok choy, cleaned and chopped
  • 14 ounces firm tofu, drained and cubed
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (or vegetarian oyster sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Sliced green onions, for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 15-20 minutes. Once pressed, cut the tofu into cubes.

Step 2: Sauté the Tofu

Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add the cubed tofu and fry until golden brown on all sides, approximately 5-7 minutes. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set it aside, leaving the oil in the pan.

Step 3: Stir-fry the Garlic

In the same skillet, add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as it can turn bitter.

Step 4: Cook the Bok Choy

Add the chopped bok choy to the skillet. Stir-fry for about 3-5 minutes until the bok choy is tender yet still crisp. If you prefer a softer texture, you can cook it a bit longer.

Step 5: Combine Ingredients

Return the cooked tofu to the skillet. Pour in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil. Gently toss the ingredients together to ensure everything is evenly coated. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Step 6: Season and Serve

Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove the skillet from the heat and transfer the stir-fried bok choy and tofu to a serving dish. Garnish with sliced green onions for a burst of color and flavor.

Serving Suggestions

This stir-fried bok choy with tofu and garlic pairs well with steamed rice or quinoa for a complete meal. You can also serve it as a side dish alongside your favorite Asian-inspired main courses.

Tips for Perfect Stir-Fried Bok Choy

  • For added protein, consider adding mushrooms or snap peas.
  • Feel free to adjust the sauces based on your taste preferences for a milder or bolder flavor.
  • Using a wok can enhance the stir-frying process, as it allows for higher heat and better circulation of ingredients.

Enjoy this healthy and satisfying dish that showcases the wonderful flavors of Chinese cuisine. Stir-fried bok choy with tofu and garlic is perfect for weeknight dinners or meal prepping for the week ahead!
