How to Cook Chinese-style Stir-Fried Mixed Vegetables with Soy Sauce

Stir-fried mixed vegetables are a staple in Chinese cuisine, bringing together vibrant flavors and a delightful crunch. Cooking this dish at home is both easy and rewarding, allowing you to customize it to your taste. Follow this simple recipe to prepare delicious Chinese-style stir-fried mixed vegetables with soy sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups mixed vegetables (bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, snap peas, and baby corn)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon water (if using cornstarch)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Cooked rice or noodles, for serving

Instructions

1. Prepare the Vegetables

Start by washing and cutting your mixed vegetables into bite-sized pieces. This ensures even cooking and makes them easier to eat. You can use fresh vegetables or frozen ones if you prefer.

2. Heat the Oil

In a large wok or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. A hot pan is essential for quick and effective stir-frying.

3. Sauté Garlic and Ginger

Once the oil is shimmering, add the minced garlic and ginger. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds, or until they become fragrant. Be careful not to burn them, as this can impart a bitter flavor to the dish.

4. Add Vegetables

Next, add your mixed vegetables to the pan. Stir-fry them for about 3-5 minutes. You want them to be crisp-tender, so avoid overcooking.

5. Incorporate Sauces

Pour in the soy sauce and optional oyster sauce. Stir well to ensure all the vegetables are coated in the sauce. The soy sauce adds a savory depth, while the oyster sauce enhances the umami flavor.

6. Add Sesame Oil

Drizzle the sesame oil over the vegetables for a nutty aroma and flavor. Stir to combine.

7. Thicken the Sauce (Optional)

If you like a thicker sauce, mix the cornstarch with the water in a small bowl and add it to the pan. Stir quickly until the sauce thickens, about 1 minute. This step is optional but can provide a nice glossy finish to your stir-fried vegetables.

8. Season to Taste

Taste the stir-fried vegetables and add salt and pepper as desired. Remember that soy sauce is already salty, so taste before adding more salt.

9. Serve

Once cooked, remove the pan from heat. Serve the stir-fried mixed vegetables over a bed of cooked rice or noodles for a complete meal. You can also garnish with sesame seeds or chopped green onions if desired.

Tips for Perfect Stir-Fried Vegetables

  • Use a variety of colorful vegetables for both nutrition and visual appeal.
  • Prepare all your ingredients beforehand, as stir-frying is a quick process.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan to ensure even cooking.
  • Feel free to add protein like chicken, tofu, or shrimp to make it a heartier dish.

Enjoy your homemade Chinese-style stir-fried mixed vegetables as a delicious side dish or a satisfying main course. With this simple recipe, you can delight your family and friends with a healthy and flavorful meal in no time!
