How to Cook Chinese-style Tofu and Stir-Fried Kale with Soy Sauce

If you're looking for a healthy and delicious dish, Chinese-style tofu and stir-fried kale with soy sauce is a perfect choice. This quick and easy recipe combines the nutritious benefits of tofu and kale, making it a wonderful main or side dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu
  • 2 cups of kale, washed and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of ginger, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess water. Wrap the block of tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 15 minutes. This will help it firm up and absorb the flavors better.

Step 2: Cut the Tofu

After pressing, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes. This will allow them to cook evenly and take on the sauce’s flavor.

Step 3: Fry the Tofu

Heat a non-stick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of sesame oil, then carefully add the tofu cubes. Fry the tofu for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4: Stir-Fry the Kale

In the same skillet, add a bit more sesame oil if needed. Add the minced garlic and ginger, sautéing for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then, add the chopped kale to the pan. Stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes until the kale is bright green and tender, but still crisp.

Step 5: Combine Tofu and Kale

Return the crispy tofu to the skillet with the kale. Pour the soy sauce over the mixture and stir well to combine. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 6: Serve

Remove the skillet from heat. If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds on top for an extra crunch. Serve your Chinese-style tofu and stir-fried kale with a side of steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Tips for Success

  • For extra flavor, try marinating the tofu in soy sauce and sesame oil for 30 minutes before cooking.
  • Add additional vegetables, such as bell peppers or carrots, if you like.
  • Adjust the soy sauce according to your taste preference; low-sodium soy sauce is a healthier option.

This simple yet flavorful dish is not only quick to prepare but also packed with vitamins and minerals, making it a fantastic addition to your weekly meal plan. Enjoy your homemade Chinese-style tofu and stir-fried kale!
