How to Prepare Chinese-style Tofu with Ginger and Soy Sauce

Tofu is a versatile ingredient renowned for its ability to absorb flavors, making it an excellent base for a variety of dishes. This Chinese-style tofu recipe with ginger and soy sauce is not only easy to prepare but also packed with flavor. Follow these simple steps to create a delicious meal that highlights the unique taste of tofu.

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 green onion, chopped for garnish
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Begin by draining the tofu and pressing it to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 15-20 minutes. This step is crucial as it helps the tofu absorb more of the flavors.

Step 2: Cut the Tofu

Once the tofu is pressed, cut it into bite-sized cubes. This size allows for even cooking and better flavor absorption.

Step 3: Heat the Oil

In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Make sure the oil is hot before adding the tofu for a nice sear.

Step 4: Cook the Tofu

Add the tofu cubes to the pan in a single layer. Allow them to cook without stirring for 3-4 minutes until they are golden brown on one side. Carefully flip the cubes and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until golden on the other side as well.

Step 5: Add Ginger and Garlic

Once the tofu is nicely browned, add the chopped ginger and minced garlic to the pan. Sauté them for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Watch closely as garlic can burn quickly.

Step 6: Combine Soy Sauce and Seasonings

Pour the soy sauce and rice vinegar (if using) over the tofu. Stir gently to coat all the cubes evenly. Allow the mixture to cook for another 2-3 minutes, letting the tofu soak up the delicious flavors.

Step 7: Finish with Sesame Oil

Drizzle the sesame oil over the tofu, season with salt and pepper to taste, and give it one last gentle stir.

Step 8: Serve

Transfer the tofu to a serving dish and garnish with chopped green onions. This dish pairs well with steamed rice or noodles, providing a complete and satisfying meal.

Enjoy your homemade Chinese-style tofu with ginger and soy sauce, a delightful combination of flavors that is sure to impress family and friends!

For variations, consider adding vegetables such as bell peppers, broccoli, or snap peas during the cooking process for added nutrition and color. This recipe is adaptable and can easily become part of your weekly meal rotation.
