How to Make Chinese-style Stir-Fried Mushrooms with Tofu and Vegetables

Stir-fried dishes are a staple in Chinese cuisine, known for their vibrant flavors and quick cooking methods. This recipe focuses on a delicious combination of mushrooms, tofu, and a variety of fresh vegetables, making it a perfect option for a healthy meal. Follow this guide to create your own Chinese-style stir-fried mushrooms with tofu and vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 200g firm tofu, drained and cubed
  • 250g mushrooms (shiitake or button), sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 carrots, julienned
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce (or a vegetarian substitute)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Spring onions, sliced for garnish

Preparation Steps

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 15 minutes. After pressing, cut the tofu into cubes. This helps the tofu absorb flavors better during cooking.

Step 2: Marinate the Tofu

In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Gently toss the tofu cubes in the mixture and let them marinate for about 15-20 minutes.

Step 3: Stir-Fry the Tofu

Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large wok or frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the marinated tofu cubes and stir-fry until they are golden brown on all sides, approximately 5-7 minutes. Remove the tofu from the pan and set it aside.

Step 4: Cook the Vegetables

In the same wok, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Once hot, add minced garlic and ginger, stirring quickly to avoid burning. After about 30 seconds, add the sliced mushrooms, bell pepper, carrots, and broccoli. Stir-fry for about 5-6 minutes until the vegetables are tender yet still crispy.

Step 5: Combine and Flavor

Add the cooked tofu back into the wok along with the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil. Stir well to coat all the ingredients. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper if necessary.

Step 6: Serve

Once everything is cooked and well mixed, remove from heat. Transfer the stir-fried mushrooms, tofu, and vegetables to a serving dish. Garnish with sliced spring onions for a fresh touch.

This Chinese-style stir-fried mushrooms with tofu and vegetables dish pairs well with steamed rice or noodles. It is not only healthy and flavorful but also quick to prepare, making it ideal for a weeknight dinner. Enjoy!
