Ingredients

To make this delightful dessert, you'll need the following ingredients:

  • For the Cake:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • For the Pastry Cream:
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the Chocolate Glaze:
  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions

Making the Cake

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, and stir in the vanilla extract.

4. Gradually mix in the flour mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, until just combined.

5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth out the tops. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Making the Pastry Cream

1. In a saucepan, whisk together the milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt over medium heat until well combined.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Gradually add a small amount of the hot milk mixture to the egg yolks while whisking constantly to temper the eggs. Then pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan.

3. Cook the custard mixture over medium heat, whisking continuously, until it thickens and begins to bubble. Remove from heat, stir in the butter and vanilla extract, and let cool.

Making the Chocolate Glaze

1. In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat and add the chopped chocolate.

2. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes, then stir until smooth and glossy.

Assembling the Boston Cream Pie

1. Place one cake layer on a serving platter. Spread half of the cooled pastry cream on top.

2. Carefully place the second layer of cake on top of the cream.

3. Pour the chocolate glaze over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides for a beautiful finish.

4. Chill the assembled cake in the refrigerator for at least an hour to allow the flavors to meld.
