Cooking a delicious Chinese tofu and vegetable stir-fry is an excellent way to enjoy a healthy and flavorful meal. This dish is not only quick to prepare but also versatile, allowing you to customize it with your favorite vegetables. Follow these simple steps to create a mouthwatering stir-fry that will satisfy your taste buds.

Ingredients Needed

To make a delightful Chinese tofu and vegetable stir-fry, gather the following ingredients:

  • 14 oz (400g) firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 1 cup snap peas
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece ginger, minced
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooked rice or noodles to serve

Preparation Steps

Follow these steps to prepare your stir-fry:

1. Prepare the Tofu

Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 15-20 minutes. This will help achieve a crispier texture when cooked.

2. Cut the Tofu

Once the tofu is pressed, cut it into bite-sized cubes. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Flip the tofu halfway through for even browning. Remove the tofu from the pan and set aside.

3. Stir-Fry the Vegetables

In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and ginger, sautéing for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Next, toss in the sliced bell pepper, broccoli florets, and snap peas. Stir-fry the vegetables for about 5-6 minutes until they are tender yet still crisp.

4. Combine Tofu and Sauce

Return the browned tofu to the skillet and pour in the soy sauce and sesame oil. Mix thoroughly to combine all the ingredients. Gradually add the cornstarch and water mixture to thicken the sauce, stirring continuously for about 1 minute until the sauce is glossy.

5. Season and Serve

Season the stir-fry with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and serve hot over cooked rice or noodles. Enjoy your homemade Chinese tofu and vegetable stir-fry!

Tips for the Perfect Stir-Fry

  • Feel free to add other vegetables such as carrots, bok choy, or zucchini according to your preferences.
  • For extra flavor, sprinkle some sesame seeds or chopped green onions before serving.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, add chili flakes or Szechuan peppercorns during the cooking process.
  • Using a high smoke point oil, like canola or peanut oil, can enhance the overall stir-fry experience.

Cooking a Chinese tofu and vegetable stir-fry is a nutritious, quick, and easy meal option for busy weeknights or leisurely weekends. This recipe is sure to impress your family and friends while providing a healthy dose of vegetables and protein.
