How to Make Chinese-style Steamed Tofu with Vegetables

Chinese-style steamed tofu with vegetables is a delightful dish that combines the delicate flavors of tofu and fresh vegetables. Easy to prepare and full of nutrients, this dish is perfect for a healthy meal. Here’s how to make it.

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu
  • 1 cup of broccoli florets
  • 1 cup of sliced bell peppers (red, yellow, or green)
  • 1 cup of sliced carrots
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Start by draining the tofu and pressing it gently to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 15 to 20 minutes. This ensures that the tofu absorbs the flavors better.

Step 2: Chop the Vegetables

While the tofu is being pressed, wash and chop the vegetables. Aim for uniform sizes to ensure even cooking. Broccoli, bell peppers, and carrots not only add a vibrant color but also a crunchy texture to the dish.

Step 3: Make the Marinade

In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, and minced ginger. Mix well to create a flavorful marinade that will enhance the overall dish.

Step 4: Cut the Tofu

After pressing, cut the tofu into thick slices or cubes, depending on your preference. Place the tofu on a steaming dish or a heatproof plate that fits into your steamer.

Step 5: Assemble the Dish

Arrange the chopped vegetables around and on top of the tofu. Drizzle the marinade evenly over both the tofu and the vegetables. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Don’t forget to sprinkle some chopped green onions for added flavor!

Step 6: Steam the Tofu and Vegetables

Fill a pot or a steamer with water, making sure it doesn’t touch the steaming dish. Bring the water to a simmer, then place the dish with tofu and vegetables in the steamer. Cover and steam for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender but still vibrant.

Step 7: Serve and Garnish

Once done, remove the dish from the steamer and let it cool for a minute. For a finishing touch, sprinkle sesame seeds on top. Serve the Chinese-style steamed tofu with rice or noodles for a complete meal.
