If you're looking for a quick, healthy, and delicious meal, Chinese-style tofu and mushroom stir-fry is an excellent choice. Packed with protein from tofu and rich flavors from mushrooms, this dish is not only satisfying but also easy to prepare. Below is a simple recipe that will guide you through the process of making this delightful stir-fry.

Ingredients

To prepare this flavorful dish, gather the following ingredients:

  • 1 block of firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 2 cups of assorted mushrooms (shiitake, button, or oyster), sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 2-3 green onions, chopped
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (or vegetarian alternative)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooked rice or noodles (for serving)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Start by draining the tofu and pressing it for about 15-20 minutes to remove excess moisture. This will help achieve a crispy texture when frying. After pressing, cube the tofu into bite-sized pieces.

Step 2: Stir-Fry the Tofu

In a large non-stick skillet or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the cubed tofu in a single layer. Allow the tofu to fry for about 5 minutes on each side until it is golden and crispy. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.

Step 3: Cook the Vegetables

Add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil to the skillet. Add minced garlic and ginger, stirring for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then, add the sliced mushrooms and red bell pepper. Stir-fry for about 5-7 minutes, or until the mushrooms are tender and the bell pepper is slightly charred.

Step 4: Combine and Season

Return the crispy tofu to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil. Toss all the ingredients together until well-coated. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 5: Serve

Once everything is heated through, remove the stir-fry from the heat. Sprinkle chopped green onions on top for added freshness. Serve the Chinese-style tofu and mushroom stir-fry over cooked rice or noodles. Enjoy your healthy, delicious meal!

Tips for Perfect Stir-Fry

  • Prepping all your ingredients before cooking can make the process smoother and faster.
  • Feel free to customize the vegetables according to your preferences. Broccoli, carrots, and snap peas are great additions.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of rice vinegar or a dash of chili sauce for spice.

This Chinese-style tofu and mushroom stir-fry is perfect for a weeknight dinner or meal prep. With its rich flavors and wholesome ingredients, it's sure to become a favorite in your household. Enjoy the taste of homemade Chinese cuisine right at your table!
