How to Prepare Chinese-style Stir-Fried Tofu with Carrots and Peas

Making a delightful Chinese-style stir-fried tofu dish with carrots and peas is both easy and rewarding. This recipe highlights the vibrant flavors and textures of fresh vegetables combined with protein-rich tofu. Ingredients

  • 1 block firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup fresh carrots, sliced thinly
  • 1 cup peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional for flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Start by preparing the tofu. Drain the firm tofu from its package and press it between paper towels to remove excess moisture. Cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes. This method helps the tofu absorb flavors and ensures a better texture when stir-frying.

Step 2: Heat the Oil

In a large non-stick skillet or wok, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Ensure the oil is hot but not smoking to prevent sticking.

Step 3: Cook the Tofu

Add the cubed tofu to the hot oil in the skillet. Cook for about 10 minutes, turning occasionally until all sides are golden brown and crispy. Once done, remove the tofu from the skillet and set it aside on a plate.

Step 4: Stir-Fry the Vegetables

In the same skillet, add a little more oil if necessary, and toss in the sliced carrots. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they start to become tender.

Next, add the peas and minced garlic to the skillet. Continue to stir-fry for an additional 2 minutes until the vegetables are vibrant and cooked through but still crisp.

Step 5: Combine Tofu and Sauce

Once the vegetables are perfectly cooked, return the tofu to the skillet. Pour in the soy sauce and oyster sauce (if using). Stir well to coat all the ingredients evenly. Cook for another 1-2 minutes to heat everything through, allowing the sauce to infuse flavor.

Step 6: Finish with Sesame Oil

Remove the skillet from heat and drizzle in the sesame oil for added richness and flavor. Season with salt and pepper to your taste.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

Garnish the stir-fried tofu with chopped green onions before serving. This dish pairs wonderfully with steamed rice or noodles, making it a versatile addition to your weekly meals.
