Ingredients
- 400g firm tofu
- 2 bell peppers (red and green), sliced
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (or vegetarian oyster sauce)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Green onions, for garnish
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Tofu
Start by draining the firm tofu and pressing it to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place something heavy on top for about 15 minutes. Once drained, cut the tofu into cubes or slices, based on your preference.
Step 2: Marinate the Tofu
In a bowl, mix the soy sauce and cornstarch. Add the tofu cubes to the mixture and gently toss to coat. Let it marinate for about 15-20 minutes for maximum flavor absorption.
Step 3: Stir-Fry the Vegetables
Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the sliced onions, minced garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes until the onions are translucent.
Next, add the sliced bell peppers to the skillet. Continue to cook for another 3-4 minutes or until the peppers become slightly tender but still retain some crunch.
Step 4: Cook the Tofu
Push the vegetables to the side of the skillet and add a little more oil if needed. Carefully place the marinated tofu in the skillet. Let it cook for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally until golden brown on all sides.
Step 5: Combine Everything
Once the tofu is nicely browned, mix it with the vegetables in the skillet. Add the oyster sauce and stir everything thoroughly so that the tofu and vegetables are evenly coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 6: Serve and Garnish
Remove the skillet from heat and transfer the stir-fried tofu and peppers to a serving plate. Garnish with chopped green onions for an extra burst of flavor. Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
This Chinese-style stir-fried tofu with peppers is not only easy to prepare but also incredibly versatile. Feel free to add other vegetables such as snap peas, broccoli, or carrots based on your preference. Enjoy this healthy dish packed with fresh flavors and vibrant colors!
