How to Cook Chinese-style Tofu and Spinach Stir-Fry

Tofu and spinach stir-fry is a delicious and nutritious dish that's easy to prepare. This Chinese-style recipe highlights the savory flavors of tofu paired with fresh spinach, making it a perfect meal for anyone looking for a healthy vegetarian option. Follow these steps to create a delightful stir-fry that will satisfy your taste buds.

Ingredients

  • 1 block of firm tofu
  • 2 cups fresh spinach
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (or vegetarian oyster sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: sliced scallions and sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu

Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the block of tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 15-20 minutes. This helps the tofu attain a firmer texture and allows it to absorb flavors better.

Step 2: Cut the Tofu

After pressing, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes. Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Once hot, carefully add the tofu cubes and fry until they are golden brown on all sides, approximately 8-10 minutes. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set it aside.

Step 3: Cook the Spinach

In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Then, add the spinach to the skillet and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, or until the spinach wilts down.

Step 4: Combine and Season

Return the cooked tofu to the skillet with the spinach. Gently stir to combine the tofu and spinach. Pour in the soy sauce and oyster sauce, mixing well to ensure everything is well coated. Drizzle with sesame oil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

Transfer the tofu and spinach stir-fry to serving plates. If desired, garnish with sliced scallions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds for an added crunch. Serve hot, either by itself or over a bed of cooked rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Tips for Perfect Tofu and Spinach Stir-Fry

  • For extra flavor, marinate the tofu in soy sauce for 15 minutes before cooking.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like bell peppers or carrots to enhance the stir-fry.
  • Ensure your skillet is hot enough before adding the tofu to achieve a good sear.
  • Using fresh, organic spinach can elevate the taste and nutritional value of your dish.

This Chinese-style tofu and spinach stir-fry is not only quick to prepare but also packed with nutrients and flavor. Enjoy this healthy dish as part of your weekly meal prep or as a quick weeknight dinner. Happy cooking!
