How to Make Chinese-style Stir-Fried Carrots and Tofu with Sesame Oil

Chinese-style stir-fried carrots and tofu with sesame oil is a delicious and healthy dish that combines the earthiness of tofu with the sweetness of carrots, all enhanced by the rich flavor of sesame oil. This quick recipe is perfect for a weeknight dinner or as a side dish for your favorite Asian-inspired meals.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium carrots, julienned
  • 1 block of firm tofu, pressed and diced
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Green onions, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu
Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for about 15-20 minutes. Once pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.

Step 2: Cook the Tofu
In a large non-stick skillet or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add the cubed tofu and cook until golden brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Once done, remove the tofu from the skillet and set it aside.

Step 3: Stir-Fry the Carrots
In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of sesame oil. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Next, toss in the julienned carrots and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until they are tender yet still crisp.

Step 4: Combine and Flavor
Return the cooked tofu to the skillet with the carrots. Add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sugar (if using). Stir everything together and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 5: Serve
Once everything is properly cooked and seasoned, remove the skillet from heat. Garnish your stir-fried carrots and tofu with chopped green onions. Serve hot over steamed rice or enjoy it as a standalone dish.

Tips for the Best Stir-Fried Carrots and Tofu

  • For added crunch, consider throwing in some bell peppers or snap peas.
  • Make sure to use firm or extra-firm tofu for the best texture when cooking.
  • Adjust the soy sauce quantity to your taste preference; low-sodium options are great for those watching their salt intake.
  • Experiment with adding other spices or sauces, such as chili paste for a bit of heat!

This Chinese-style stir-fried carrots and tofu with sesame oil is not only a satisfying meal but also packed with nutrients. Enjoy this vegan-friendly dish as part of your healthy lifestyle, and feel free to customize it with your favorite vegetables or protein.
